One suggested solution from Gladwell that I love is that American elite institutions accept far too few undergraduates compared to Canadian elite institutions. This results in absurd selection criteria.

I'm generally skeptical of the "everything is signaling" camp, but the ridiculous scarcity of elite college admissions is one case that really seems to be signaling.
