I suspect the family separation border policy will have had a very dark effect on the communities from which the detention centers draw their employees. There are consequences to submerging people in hierarchies where empathy is shattered against authority as a matter of routine

I bet modern humans are (a) very good at compartmentalizing and (b) already extremely damaged, so hard to damage further on the margins. If I could think of a good bettable observation, I'd offer to bet against you (out of desire to test myself, not out of great certainty).

Though actually, a large part of my motivation behind the bet would be "most things don't affect most other things according to the replication study".

It's not a case of "shattering" empathy but a case of who gets the empathy. Though personally, I've never had much empathy for thieves, human traffickers, and drug dealers anyways.

Why would there be a conflict between the two forces? Empathy happens towards members of one's ingroup for many (most?) people; and even if this trait is relatively rare, detention centers could just selectively hire those who have it.
