Courage is probably the highest ROI character trait right now & the most valuable form isn't one most of us have practiced. It's not taking the leap, it's maintaining focus & enthusiasm while you're in freefall

The hard but necessary work is forming courageous communities — individuals in those communities both sustain one another's courage through exercising it & protect each other courageously. But there's a dark side, when communities become violent. We must be courageous *playfully*

In a society that is becoming increasingly lost, play itself starts to become subversive. Individual curiosity generates the games & communal courage + gentleness generate the playground. But there's a courage that undergirds both other components

That last point is easily hidden from the self. If you find yourself endulging in cruelty, ask yourself if there's some fearful thing that could result from gentleness. If you find yourself looking away, ask yourself if there's some fearful thing that could result from curiosity

A lot of the time we don't stand up for other people — for example — I think it's because we're afraid that whatever they're about to get is going to be directed at us, too. But if I'm right, and play is becoming subversive, the consequences of that lack of courage are severe
