That last point is easily hidden from the self. If you find yourself endulging in cruelty, ask yourself if there's some fearful thing that could result from gentleness. If you find yourself looking away, ask yourself if there's some fearful thing that could result from curiosity

A lot of the time we don't stand up for other people — for example — I think it's because we're afraid that whatever they're about to get is going to be directed at us, too. But if I'm right, and play is becoming subversive, the consequences of that lack of courage are severe
