The first ep of the Portal actually covers this in greater detail, but anyway: society is predicated on ever-improving lives & comfortable retirements. And those are predicated on wealth that grows passively: economic growth. If that falters? All that's left is the cash grab.

NIMBYs sit on homes that ensure they spend their final years wealthy. The nursery is repainted; now it's a study. Professors are teaching grad students deluded w/ the belief they'll themselves be professors. If the pie grows, fine. If not, it's a debt-financed transfer of wealth.
