That’s another part of it. The need for two incomes to raise a child means there’s a stronger emphasis on two upwardly mobile spouses. A marriage like my parents (lawyer/no-college career activist) is borderline impossible today. And the dating market comes to emphasize “market.”

We all wind up herded together, desperately eyeing each other for serviceable prospects in an increasingly neo-Victorian way, hoping to find someone early enough, or marry up enough, to either flee somewhere else or carve just enough space where we are. Most will fail at that.
