You make a good, if dismal point. I'm thinking we're a bit like old Ptolemaic Egypt, riven by corruption, decadence and falling birthrates. When the Prophet's successors arrived with their armies, which were small but fevrent, there was nothing to stop them.

The only problem I see with this take is that there will never be a childless city. There will only be less children. I think this will be a good thing bc kids will have more adults to look up to and less bad influence of peer groups. Possibly.
