The first ep of the Portal actually covers this in greater detail, but anyway: society is predicated on ever-improving lives & comfortable retirements. And those are predicated on wealth that grows passively: economic growth. If that falters? All that's left is the cash grab.
NIMBYs sit on homes that ensure they spend their final years wealthy. The nursery is repainted; now it's a study. Professors are teaching grad students deluded w/ the belief they'll themselves be professors. If the pie grows, fine. If not, it's a debt-financed transfer of wealth.

In a time when we are in increasing peril, we have to be *more* bold. As the walls close in on what's acceptable to say or even think, we have to be *more* free. We have to be optimistic as the alarms go off. We have to play while the bombs drop. We just have to.
I think it's not unreasonable to see the sharpest in the IDW as a bunch of gen-Xers who see that their generation burnt the libraries for warmth & what stands to be lost is the best of the *human* tradition. And so they're racing the cultural fever pitch to build a new Agora
