I share your intuition. But I also observe the immense reach of anthropomorphizing when feeling bad for my Roomba getting stuck on a doorsill...
This is very different. I don't know if I'd die but I'd probably lose an arm for one of my dogs.

I dunno — I came home one day and heard Bert screaming because he'd somehow broken both of his front legs & tried to come to me when he heard me open the door. No human being has ever said anything that triggered me in the way that sound did. It is what it is
