The availability of a large crew of friends is totally contigent on local factors, and it's something that matters to kids to varying degrees as with adults. Homeschooling at scale suffers or blossoms on network effects

Susceptibility to bullying is also a variable factor. A sizeable minority of kids in schools are definitely subject to net-negative experiences with other kids

Adding that some home-educated folk found the social life way, way better in home-ed circles than when we experimented with school
