It's so strange to me how comfortable we are with telling the old that they're a burden who should choose death or have it chosen for them — For The Good of Society. People let these things fall out of their mouths with no thought at all, like accidental sometime-death cultists

Death is a horrifying thing. I don't think you should choose it for yourself. I especially don't think you should spread memes that encourage people to think of themselves, including their future selves, as burdens on society who are unworthy of life.
The important thing is that they relinquish their power over government, which is very different, but people have a hard time conceptualizing another way for it to happen. Disenfranchising seniors somehow seems _worse_, or at least less thinkable, than them dying? It’s weird.
Seniors are as capable of changing their minds as anyone. Perhaps more so in a society that didn’t habitually envisage death before a change of opinion.

It shows a troubling lack of empathy and far-sightedness. They don't seem to realise or care that THEY will be the old ones eventually.
