Reasonable take, but I don't expect much efficacy — the text doesn't parse easily for little kids, and by the time it does it's just a program that runs automatically on the minimum required brain cells. For that reason, I'm more interested in the ritual than the content
When I was recalling the pledge while writing this tweet, I couldn't actually remember what the gist of it was. I just started with "I pledge allegiance..." and the rest tumbled forth. It just does not seem to be stored somewhere meaningful things go
Hmm, good point - I didn’t go to school so my learning of the pledge was only at a time I was interested in it. Still I suspect the intention is shared civic culture as described. But name one decent intention that works as planned in a school....
