Tom Wolfe’s jibe that fascism is forever descending in America and landing in Europe occurs to mind. Part of this country’s genius was being able to turn 20th century forces towards often productive ends; it is no surprise that may have required means which now seem strange.
Alternate theory: inadequate equilibria. Pledge of Allegiance weirds me out, but I think of it more as a quaint relic that, while Americans aren't particularly passionate about, would look unpatriotic to get rid of, so we keep it around

Israeli here. We have conscription and far more pro-military in general, and the pledge of allegiance still weirds me the heck out.
