It's a little weird to still be able to recite the pledge to perfection... as far as I can tell, there's no other slice of memorization from my childhood that's survived to adulthood with the same fidelity. Even the standard classroom cadence survived

The USA is very insecure and always wondering if you are thinking about other countries.
I echo the weirdness but I recognize why it exists. A few million kids thrown together in a new place with families espousing different values have nothing in common. Patriotism makes for a decent way to bootstrap egalitarianism.
And the additional detail of pledging to the flag first, and republic second, so it'd be like it's trad that you pledge that you love the first picture of us together that's on our mantel...and to me too, but for sure, the picture.
This is a good point. If the pledge left out mention of the republic, you could think of the flag as symbolic, but since they’re both mentioned, pledging to the flag takes on a creepy idolatry.
I couldn’t believe it when I heard about the daily pledge of allegiance, thought my friend was joking. Is it possible to say “our job is to brainwash kids” any more clearly?
I cannot imagine that there's any way for this to not look extremely strange and somewhat disturbing to anyone from another western democracy that does not do this
