The difference between people/organizations/institutions that never make you do obviously stupid things for obviously stupid reasons & those that occasionally do — even rarely — is immense

I've never done knowledge work but the hardest part about dummy work (bussing tables, stocking shelves) is the not-noticing. The real 'work' isn't the task (however unpleasant) it's the constant giving up that you have to do to get through the day.
