The difference between people/organizations/institutions that never make you do obviously stupid things for obviously stupid reasons & those that occasionally do — even rarely — is immense

This feels true, what are some good examples?
Teachers, schools, friend groups, jobs. When you are essentially *never* asked to do anything pointless, or at least given the freedom to stop without penalty when you discover your task is pointless, respect is feasible. Without respect, authority is required to maintain order

From a parental standpoint (and perhaps more broadly in humanity), just substitute “respect” for “love and trust.”
