I think worrying about physical safety while wearing a MAGA hat is more of a media creation than the meaning of the hat itself, but to the extent that it's true, the stakes are just higher now. The consequences of the 2008 election were modest by comparison.

I'm not being disingenuous. I'm being curious. I really do think many pro-lifers believe that abortion is genuinely murder, so I'm not sure they'd agree with you that the stakes are higher here. There's something that's happening independent of the content layer.
