There is zero doubt in my mind that school made me an irreparably stupider person than I once had the potential to be just by depriving my brain of any kind of stimulation for most of my waking hours, most days, for more than a decade. How could it possibly be otherwise?

It would be interesting to survey schoolkids on how many of them have caused themselves physical pain (e.g. pinching, scratching, cutting) in the classroom to distract themselves from boredom. But no, I don't think even that would be a sufficient wakeup call.

My eating disorder was one of the most enjoyable aspects of my high school years. I hope some parents who need to sit with that go ahead and do so.

Whatever happened to flipping the classroom and all the innovative stuff khan academy and researchers in Finland were cooking up 5-10 years ago?

Doodles! I was that person. My wife laughs whenever she finds one of my old high school or college notebooks, 90% doodles, 10% half assed note taking. Still haven’t taught myself how to take proper ‘notes’.

So I bought this book, immediately after seeing this recommendation, read it cover to cover, downloaded the software, already seeing massive improvements in my thinking/writing.https://twitter.com/DoctorSekzi/status/1318995639670345736 …

So many days in middle school or high school when I remember coming home at 5-6pm, with that feeling like I didn't accomplish or learn anything all day.

When I was leaving school this “shrugging” was a complete mindfuck. I would have done anything to avoid feeling like this OTOH everyone else seemed unable to even acknowledge this meant a lot to me, let alone accept it. In their mind it was asking for a triviality.

I had good time at school, but I think it was total waste of my time. Last two years of high school I had less than 50% attendance rate, which officially should have disqualified me from graduating if it wasn’t for my GPA. But stuff like this makes me mad:https://twitter.com/mizroba/status/1051519655284748288?s=21 …

Probably depends on whether your school lets you read a book under the desk.

Schools/teachers that *force* you to be bored as part of their weird power moves are so much worse.
