Information gaps were the most salient disadvantage for kids in HP, which is why Hermoine was such a crucial character, the Marauder's Map and polyjuice potion got so much play, and many plotlines were based on gaining access to forbidden knowledge and spaces...

Oh yeah, I don’t think kids were especially adept in HDM (the way they were in the HP universe). Still, I have the feeling that Pullman somehow rendered their experiences authentically — esp. the experience of being disoriented by the adult world and not knowing who to follow.
