who the hell thought it would be a good idea to shove a bunch of kids of the same age into a room for most of the day and let them figure out social interactions from *other kids their age*?? For like, *all* of childhood and teenage years? What the fuck are we doing

honestly i suspect the public school system is maybe the biggest contribution to human unhappiness in the western world and i feel like I'm in crazy town that nobody seems to think it's a big deal.

People let their kids be subjected to a regulated Lord of the Flies situation as a trade for access to high incomes via higher ed admissions. The latter is falling apart and, slowly, people are starting to get a clue

I think that holds true for private schools but at the public level, I think the justification is more about the need for childcare created by the modern econ . Like, I need someone to watch my kid while i'm at work and if they learn something in the process, that'd be cool.

Right, but people don't tell themselves "I can't watch my kid so I subject them to moderated Lord of the Flies." You tell me what your story is. Generally the assumption is that it's going to work out well for the kid.

I *do* feel for parents in this situation, but only insofar as they're either ignorant or their child is in a rare net-enjoyable situation. Otherwise, it's not justifiable, and I will never pretend that is.

I def agree, and your pov makes me think that mine is little too realpolitik. And now that I think about it, college prep seems like a sorta insidious rationalization of the fly lord treatment that the majority of parents have internalized without too much thought

Feel free to ignore this cause I'm just gonna spitball into the void for a sec. Maybe the problem of the fly lord scenario as Aella describes it, emerges from the bundling of childcare and education. bc to do mass childcare, there's gonna be demographic segregation

and the econ incentive for schools incentivizes keeping as many kids in school for as long as possible so you don't try to treat them like people who could be competent enough to transcend the need for k-12.
