Because Project Xanadu didn't solve micropayments, you are the product instead of the consumer, and you are being lured and baited with anger. Because Xanadu didn't solve bidirectional commentary, your civilization is going mad with lies. They tried to stop it. They were too few.

Might actually be fun to write an alternate history where Xanadu succeeded at these things, seeing how it diverged. Note that many of the above gripes started playing out after 2000, so 1990s history might be pretty unchanged (but different dotcoms!)
