Spent a month in China in 2014. One of my strongest memories is the overnight train from Xi’an to Beijing. I booked the most expensive berth I could, didn’t have to share, and so I sat in the armchair, turned out the cabin lights, and watched a new country roll past me.

I don't know about you, but it reminds me of being a kid. Like, you often didn't know where you were going on a trip, but you knew that the person taking you will get you there. Its nice to feel that sense of trust and not always be on guard.

I've thought about this: Your location is entirely unknown for once, which is an unfamiliar treat. almost like being hidden, off the grid - yet you can feel safe knowing the rails are guiding you to where you need to be,
