re: sf housing crisis, could we charter massive cruise ships to permanently circle the area, picking up / dropping off in the city 5 or 10 times a day? maybe 10 ships, 50,000 rooms?

that didn’t even occur to me - that’s brilliant. dramatically reduces energy costs and pretty much kills the environmental argument against.

I asked one of the Seasteading Institute guys about this and he claims the economics don’t work; either you dock (and pay a ton) or people slosh around too much. Which is infuriating! Because you can buy cruise ships for like $100k per room.

The service running passengers from the ships to shore would be... uboats.

Judging by how cheap rent is on Treasure Island compared to SF, I would think that demand for this would be surprisingly low due to the isolation factor
-
I rarely see units available on Treasure Island, and when I do, they seem comparable to East Bay prices...? Which is to say: still very, very high, indicating high demand

Bonus points if you put them so far out that they're in international waters and you can lower your taxes.

It’s like a Distance Ed university that is wondering how to expand its campus, isn’t it? Why is the Bay Area especially important other than the minds that are there? Couldn’t minds live elsewhere? Rural Canada is pretty rad. No need to be seasteading.

You could also build infinitely scalable underground neighborhoods with downward spiraling networks of dwellings connected to loop and hyperloop systems – as Feynman said, "there's plenty of room at the bottom"

Or a pier. IIRC Berkeley Pier used to be something like 1/4 the width of the bay and supported cars in the 1940s.
