If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle. - Sun Tzu

We’re very quickly forgetting about the banality of evil. Horrible atrocities wouldn’t occur if regular people with internally coherent motivations did not commit or enable them.
-
What people are *really* uncomfortable with is the idea that people who commit atrocities exist within larger groups that *also* often have internally coherent motivations, explicit or emergent, & that both respond to the game theoretic environment. Understanding is not excusing.

yes i believe pretty strongly that step 1 to moving beyond a culture war is learning how to understand the internal motivations of your “opponent” without getting sucked into their ideology yourself. lowercase-L liberalism assumes that this is possible, hence freedom of speech

I think you can't really understand collective hallucinations from a POV with [rational] agenda. That's why art is so successful at this! (I for one "got" Nazism when I watched The White Ribbon and where Christianity was coming from from Spiro's Captivity.... Etc. That works.)
-
Internal coherence doesn't mean good assumptions or clear perception emerging from a culture that takes bad ones for granted! Indeed, understanding how reasoning proceeds from there is critical to getting a handle on this

"The line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being." When we think of our enemies, political and otherwise, as too-far-gone evil, that's when we become the ones willing to commit atrocities.
