This sometimes works out well - I was very lucky giving one of my books away for free online ( https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/1031256363458916352 … ). But that involved (a) a lot of luck; and (b) was very field-specific. I wish there was a general model for aligning these interests.

Self-publishing probably increases s/n for lone-genius authored books who have access to all the data they need at their fingertips. & the gutting of trad publishing institutions probably lowers s/n for anything requiring shoe-leather research (& benefitting from fact checking).

So, self-publishing is probably good for founder/inventor *auto*biographies and less good for highly skilled research/interviewer biographers.

Giving people too many options of what to do with their limited time. If I have to read reviews and opinions on 10 books to find the best, is that better than just reading the 2nd best, but as the only option? (I don't mean that to sound condescending, I don't know the answer)

Findability keeps improving, though, modulo filter bubbles. See the longer and longer titles of self-published books that have multiple colons and multiple subtitles. Eventually everything will be "search inside" like http://books.google.com , for better or worse.
