this is a prime example of selection bias. you can't make a generalization about american school spaces because the variance is huge.

Years ago my middle school entertained some BS study about neon colors stimulating the mind, and therefore the school thought that having us wear bright neon green hats in class would improve our cognitive abilities. We all were just so distracted by how dumb we looked.

Best School Space for Young Kids = Home. We waste enormous amounts of time, money, and effort building, maintaining, and traveling to and from "School Facilities". For older kids (above age 12) use a U shape classroom w/ whiteboard at to of U. Spend class solving problems.

In the early 80's in México City I had the privilege to attend school where physical spaces were important, Colegio de Ciencias y Humanidades. It was surrounded by threes and classrooms were in various levels. Loved the feeling. Yes, physical spaces are highly overlooked.

I've been reading The Timeless Way of Building lately and although it's about all buildings (and the meta of towns, cities, etc) I feel like it'd also be a great book for schools: codifying the good patterns for children as well as adults and then building those out further
