This "independence" fetish is one of the most perplexing features of Anglo-culture. IRL it often seems to amount to substituting the dependence on people who were supposed to love you for the veneer of independence = really just dependence on people and systems that don't care.
Dependence on contracts vs. dependence on community — too strong a tilt in either direction is not preferable
The objective, as I see it, should be to help people put functioning lives together. That’s ultimately the thing that’s best for everybody. Whatever does that should be the set up. Yet this objective seems to never be discussed.
