Can we have a conversation about how weird it is that we just assume that "teenage rebellion" is supposed to look like clinical depression?https://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1137410276490301440 …

LOL, it's even worse than that. Being a rebellious teenager is itself now considered a mental disorder: oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Grieving the death of a close friend/family/ pet is also now clinical depression. Someone wanted to sell more antidepressants !!

Even worse, biologically teenagers are supposed to want to become adults, and should naturally rebel against anyone or anything that stops that process. Some cultures don't even have the ico of the "rebellious teenager/adolescent" they just have 14 year olds act as adults.

On the subject of biology, I read somewhere that teens are chronically sleep deprived because their biological clocks are skewed to late-night activities, so starting high school at 8 (or earlier!) really messes w/them.

This is very well-defended in the literature now, and as far as we can tell it doesn't seem to be something most teens can adjust. We're also very early in the game when it comes to understanding the consequences of chronic sleep deprivation on developing brains
