We treat kids and young adults in ways that could reasonably be expected to produce great stress and statistically higher levels of depression and anxiety, and then talk about it like kids are just inherently neurotic. Christ.

I shut off my own lights pretty early. Put in therapy at age 14; internalized "I need therapy," and had a terrible therapist to boot; regressed to a sort of part-time agoraphobia. Parent had the brilliant idea to pay a kid to hang out with me, which of course she quickly revealed

If anyone regularly fucked with me like that today, yeah, I'd probably need to be on some kind of medication

LOL, it's even worse than that. Being a rebellious teenager is itself now considered a mental disorder: oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Grieving the death of a close friend/family/ pet is also now clinical depression. Someone wanted to sell more antidepressants !!

Even worse, biologically teenagers are supposed to want to become adults, and should naturally rebel against anyone or anything that stops that process. Some cultures don't even have the ico of the "rebellious teenager/adolescent" they just have 14 year olds act as adults.
