Children lack experience and they lack assumptions developed under old parameters in a rapidly-changing world. Due to practice, adults will often be more persuasive whether their arguments are obsolete or not. And anyway, "under my roof," etc. I hope I parent with some humility.

Part of this caution should be for interactivity test. Are children able to run experiments and interact with the medium whatever that may be or are they just consumers engaging in one way dialogue so to speak. Huge difference in consuming verses interacting, latter more benefit.

The book I bought on HTML 3.2 in 1997 (?) was ultimately more useful than any of the text books I bought for my degree at the time.

This still is a worthwhile point. There are people on the other side who want kids to be addicted, and know what levers to pull. Coding is one thing. Social media is another.

It's just more specious nonsense, the idea that things are worse now. Things are always 'worse' when they happen to you. Adults will always complain about the next generation, it's nothing new and despite a new look it's just as trite.

I struggle a bit with this. Sometimes I worry about my kids spending too much time on Minecraft or whatever. Then I'll watch them build things and their architectural chops floor me. My son build a model of Fort Laramie in Minecraft for a school project and it was incredible.

Not everything that pattern matches to “this sounds like what parents said when I was growing up” matches in value There’s a substantial difference between fucking around and learning, and fucking around and consuming
