The fact that any family would find it in their best interests to do a a regular 1200 mile work commute is certainly a policy failure — that we can agree on. But like so many part-time wonks, you're very quick to judge them for it, as though they set the board for this nightmare.

"The only useful measure of housing affordability is rent." This is not correct. We also use home sale market price and replacement construction cost to estimate the value of homes. Also SF, and other cities in Cal, have severe housing shortages due to bad policy.

That there are many ways of valuing a home's price, most which only indirect relation to the function of shelter, but roughly only one (supply and demand) of pricing rent is evidence that housing affordability should be inferred from rent and not ownership costs.
