The different in rent between a new 4 bedroom McMansion in Dublin, CA and Phoenix, AZ is about $1500 m/o. Let's round up and say $2000. There is no reason a semi-regular 1,200 mile round trip commute should cost less than that a month.
I'm sorry, it sounded like you were getting *quite* into the weeds on family specifics when you felt comfortable making the comparison to a helicopter-flying hedge fund manager in the Hamptons. I assume factors like school quality & neighborhood safety were irrelevant from there

The fact that any family would find it in their best interests to do a a regular 1200 mile work commute is certainly a policy failure — that we can agree on. But like so many part-time wonks, you're very quick to judge them for it, as though they set the board for this nightmare.

"The only useful measure of housing affordability is rent." This is not correct. We also use home sale market price and replacement construction cost to estimate the value of homes. Also SF, and other cities in Cal, have severe housing shortages due to bad policy.
