One of the tricky meta-skills of mastery is something like "finding mentorship with chemistry." I think this is format-neutral; you can find chemistry (or not) w/ an expert-friend, author, podcaster. Better to learn from a real master, but it's *magic* when you feel the "click"
I think people should be really gentle with themselves when they're trying to learn something and they just can't connect to the materials/teachers they have. There are lots of possible reasons for this, but a very real & neglected possibility is just a lack of chemistry
(Maybe this is why so many textbooks suck? In the interest of accessibility(?), any hint of individual tone, tangents, asides, personal examples, etc. are completely stripped. You get the feeling you're not meant to connect, but only receive. The social animal is left hungry.)

I find that the best mentorships arise when you’re working on the same project and have the opportunity to get to know each other naturally. The ones where some third party pairs you up don’t work.
This isn’t a skill, it’s a recognition.
I evidently needed someone from the “Whiplash” school to help me master my craft, and neither would I have imagined that to be the case nor would I have welcomed it. It worked nonetheless, and its provenance remains a mystery to me. Betterment through rage and fear.
Very true, but it can also be very beneficial to proactively clear away general blocks to such compatibility.
