It's odd that this sort of thing isn't more common. It seems like everyone who learned to code in the 70s/80s did so by reverse engineering and rewriting their favorite pieces of software.

Just starting out as a kiddo I couldn't afford SSL certs, but I wanted things to be relatively secure, so I put together my own PHP / MySQL auth system with salted hashes and everthang so that, even though it was only over HTTP, there were tokenized challenges and etc., etc.
