The role of luck is decisive, as anyone who agrees with Sam Harris’s ideas on free will would agree.

When I succeed at something difficult I expected to fail at, I say I was lucky. If I want to ATTEMPT something difficult, I first say "I need to be aggressive and tough (scrappy) to accomplish this." I don't just say "I need luck" and just hope things work out.

My point (and I think Sam’s point) is that your ability, and to the degree which you can be scrappy and aggressive are also fundamentally due to luck
