If you're comfortable sharing, what's something that an adult told you when you were young that — intentions aside — had a memorably negative impact on you?

To be honest, I don't really think I have any ability to trace present-day effects to unique causes in childhood conversations with adults.
I'm not asking for a present-day effect, I'm asking for an effect notable enough to be remembered in the present day

Oh, I see. In that case, I remember when I was around ten or twelve adults telling me things like "You used to be so [good characteristic]." Gave me a strange sense that I was already past my prime and starting to deteriorate.
