What a catastrophically negative off-handed comment. I'm happy to hear there's a happy conclusion here but disappointed that there are probably thousands of parallel cases which didn't end this way.
It is amazing and terrible how many comments on this thread are specifically about math, and specifically about a math educator

I was about to write math before I caught this reply. But specifically, me asking Ms Lachapelle where math equations came from and why we do things this way - 3rd grade - and she told me not to worry about it, I’d learn when I was older.
