Just personal experience, grew up with very different people than who I hang out with now and wouldn't change it. However, wouldn't say that makes it right / optimal.

Children are generally tolerant of each others' differences when they're not forced into situations where those differences are costly to them. Do that too much and you'll create learned helplessness in some kids and aggressive intolerance in others
