The tendency to forget to break a complex difficult-to-understand idea out into easier-to-understand constituent elements also goes the other way as well. I've often talked to people who are conversant in a complex idea, but who can't really explain what it consists of.

Sort of a cargo cult mentality; they can use the idea but they don't really know what it's composed of and never explore that. Experienced people often use terms or concepts that, upon examination, they don't really understand. We all do that to some extent.

An old but quite interesting book around children, computers and games is Seymour Papert's Mind-Storms: Children, Computers and Powerful Ideas, 1980.
