Neither! I think definitions are very important and definitions as social constructs are serious and important, and have large consequences on how we structure society, philosophy, politics, and law

I don't know what views OP has, but Eric Weinstein certainly seems to think "social construct" means fake based on his replies. Not sure what he earnestly *means* either, but math is definitely a social construct, just one that evolves out of largely academia and philosophy

I agree w Eric that this looks like a motte/bailey, esp looking at the replies to Matt (a mix of reply-to-motte, reply-to-bailey). We can talk about useful maths conventions, the research environment, etc. but we can't pretend these are all the same convohttps://twitter.com/EricRWeinstein/status/1126156211970138112 …

Eric WeinsteinVerified account @EricRWeinsteinReplying to @ParkerMolloy @mattyglesias @voxdotcomCool. “Sure there is mathematical truth but approaches are socially constructed.” is the Motte. Not at argument. The problem is the Bailey like this “We need people to step down because whiteness has colonized science which is socially constructed.”: https://blogs.ams.org/inclusionexclusion/2017/05/11/get-out-the-way/ …2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -

It's a sleight-of-hand trick permitted by clumsy language. "We have a variety of useful conventions in math that make the ground truths more workable but are themselves not ground truth" is a useful motte, but you never open with the motte. https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/11/03/all-in-all-another-brick-in-the-motte/ …

Yeah, I guess my takeaway now is that you either *don't* understand what a motte/bailey is, or consider it a totally benign social move as long as the motte itself is not necessarily false (regardless of how misleading it is) You do you boo
