Paul's essay seems to ignore interiority. Philosophy also investigates how we are having this experience, and what it means to be human. That doesn't get rockets to Mars, but it makes it worth getting rockets to Mars.
The ignorance of scientific thinking wrt to interiority can also be seen in the AI winter. Now that AI research and cog sci are making more use of philosophy of mind, progress seems much faster and thinking about AGI seems much more promising.
