My Twitter community across the English speaking world seems to have collectively surpassed some critical mass, and now everybody urgently wants to MEET each other. It's because the internet is ... not enough. It's a means, not an end. Time to work on the geography now.

One of the single most important developments for fighting climate-change is improved remote communications technology. Anything that obviated the need for some professional transatlantic flights

This is why advanced AR/VR could be really cool...people could get all the excitement from leisure travel without actually going anywhere

Marily Nika @marilynikaI'm getting ready to give a talk as a Hologram (or to "holoport") from LA to Imperial College. This will be the 1st holographic lecture at a university, so I'm extra pumped. Here's the link for the livestream, starting in 1.5h!

These are all great temporary substitutes. HOWEVER , it has to be resolved to move actual people and all of their atoms around better, across national, socioeconomic, political and generational boundaries, and without ruining the planet. I want to see plans for that.

would you see brain-to-brain interfaces as a substitute as well? the feeling and sense of completeness achieved could be similar; but we need to feel how it'd feel first

Good point - I see internalised screens (ear implants, lenses and other more invasive wearables and then BMI) as something potentially moving physicality to the next level. Not sure it will replace togetherness, but augmenting it: sure.

The level of fidelity required is IMO a long ways off. Tremendous information transfer happens face-to-face, and we haven't come close to replicating it with video + audio. Improving human movement/access to intellectual/creative hubs will be a good buy for decades to come
