I can understand people who don't personally want to have children. I can't understand people who have contempt for children, and (typically) contempt for the human legacy they make salient. It's a scary thing when a person's self-loathing is too big to fit their own skin alone

Yeah, this; it's also similar to the reason some atheists insult religion -- as a reaction against social pressure to treat it with deference I think the aggressively childfree people are reacting to a similar perceived pressure to say "...But, of course, kids are great!!"
Yeah, I've spent a little more time browsing the relevant online communities and feeling the need to always be on the defensive does seem to be a bigger issue than I assumed. People who seem comfortable saying kids are fine but not for them mention being pressured less frequently
