I was going to say I'd never met anyone who had contempt for children. But when I thought about it, some of the teachers in the schools I went to may have. So maybe adults who feel this way hide it from other adults...

I think it may be a generational thing. It was already a pretty common sentiment when I was in college — and I went to a midwestern state school. Pairs well with the belief that human beings are toxic to the planet, or that human civilization is a fundamentally rapacious endeavor

Is it self-loathing, or just a bad justification? If someone has the bottom line "I don't want children", but is pestered about it and their real reason isn't accepted, I can imagine them going on a counterattack: "children are bad, you should justify why I ought to have them".

Yeah, this; it's also similar to the reason some atheists insult religion -- as a reaction against social pressure to treat it with deference I think the aggressively childfree people are reacting to a similar perceived pressure to say "...But, of course, kids are great!!"

I can't understand it either. Sure do miss Joseph Chilton Pearce. It's a shame more people didn't and still don't know about him. His work was on another level. Fortunately there are still people like Mason around. So there's still some hope left.pic.twitter.com/eeUoiJ70oQ

I’ve always found that my friends who had abortions, but didn’t go on to later have kids became progressively more anti-kid. I chocked it up to them defending their initial move, but I could have the causal relationship backwards.

Personally, I don’t think I’d be a great parent + I’m pretty average athletically + I believe nurture is more important than nature. Nothing to do with contempt, only the fact I see very little upside in my having a child, given the current population trends.

Sometimes it's not so much self loathing as aquired (conditioned) irrational fear(s).
