IMO, @Jonathan_Blow is right on the money — the rent-seeking (in this case, literal *rent*) is creating an artificial gravity that pins nearly everyone to the ground. It's all on housing. SF can go on like this for a while longer, but my god will the ground be salted in the end
Sounds sadly true. I'm working with an org that focuses on helping SF companies expand to other cities where lower costs mean more flexibility, and the hurdle seems to be SF co's believing that quality talent exists elsewhere. Feels a bit chicken-and-egg.
Almost every techy who now lives in SF used to live somewhere else, so it should be self-evident that there's plenty of talent elsewhere that doesn't pay $3600/month for a one bedroom. Do they just all think they were unique?
