I read the article as saying that everyone should prefer they/them, not that everyone should use they/them once contrary preferences are made known. If I say everyone should try the new restaurant that doesn't mean I'm planning on force-feeding you.

Agreed. I think the charitable interpretation of that is to always use it as a default until told otherwise and to make it your preference as well. It's hard for me to believe that the author would belligerently call you "they" after you expressed a preference for "she".
I would certainly interpret it that way if that was what was written.
For instance the Article Title "Why We Should All Use They/Them Pronouns". "Should" is not merely suggestive, but rather quite mandatory language.
