Presumably the group "everyone" includes a lot of people who explicitly don't prefer "they" for their pronouns.
I read the article as saying that everyone should prefer they/them, not that everyone should use they/them once contrary preferences are made known. If I say everyone should try the new restaurant that doesn't mean I'm planning on force-feeding you.
I read the article as saying "using they/them for everyone, regardless of gender identity" because that is literally what it says
