I share @Jonathan_Blow's concerns, in part because I suspect the evolved system doesn't lie to itself the way that the conscious Me does — all the time — in order to project a palatable external self. To alter the insides for these purposes feels dystopian https://twitter.com/Jonathan_Blow/status/1117188648493916160 …

The lie: you'll be told what's good to know, and if you're good, you'll come to know as much of it as you can The truth: if you're lucky, you'll drink from a firehose of information, you'll discard nearly all of it, and you will think beautiful new thingshttps://twitter.com/QiaochuYuan/status/1117516149422346240 …

Feels like "school trauma" to me - people were drilled for 12-16 years that this is the sort of thing they were supposed to remember and haven't broken out of it to ask themselves what they actually want. I've seen people run into similar issues with using paper to think.

I've been struggling for years to sort out how best to use Anki for learning Japanese vocab (and occasionally grammar). I've gotten some good out of it but probably not nearly enough for the amount of time I've spent curating my cards.

I fail to see the attraction of cold memorization nowadays, when professional & academic lives require less memorization and more analytical skills. I say this because most exams now are open documentation, which realistically simulates a working environment.

I remember a doctor once mentioning that one sign of a good doctor nowadays is not having everything memorized but rather being able to look it up quickly because there's just entirely too much to memorize and it changes too fast to be worth it anyway; that always stuck with me.

I try my best not to consciously memorize anything nowadays. My brain has a natural filter on what’s important and what isn’t. And what’s important is what repeats. Surely if I just live in the world, practice and memory will form organically.
