      The desert. Beautiful, cheap, easy to reach; and the absolute stillness and silence, the directness of life there, puts into perspective the tumult and din we make for ourselves in the city.

      Joshua Tree really is as good as its reputation. You’re looking at about a 2.5-3 hour drive, but the landscape looks like nothing else and two very different deserts meet there, which gives it a unique flavor. It’s also far enough out that it can be busy, but is rarely packed.

      That's the drive time from LA - it's more like eight hours from Silicon Valley.

      Ha! Sorry- I work in LA’s South Bay, and I forget there’s more than one of them. Up there, eh, it’s more of a hike I think; the desert kind of thins out before you get too far north, once it hits the mountains.

      I didn't know that LA had a South Bay! TIL :) Yeah, I think Nevada has the nearest real desert, definitely an overnight trip.

          I think I’m wounded here. :) But yeah, we do, it’s basically the southern portion of LA County that’s not Long Beach, so Torrance, Palos Verdes, the beach cities, etc. much more suburban than big LA, but a nice area in general.
