If (a) most sustained changes require a change in circumstances (not willpower) & (b) exceptional performers across activities do things qualitatively differently from typical performers, perhaps we should expect "I'll push myself to do more x for better outcomes" to usually fail

I feel like "epiphany" fits this idea but is somewhat limited. "Striking oil" for more external circumstances, maybe "having an awakening" for more internal.

IMO, we tend to think of those sorts of things as events that change the direction/potential/pace of a *project* rather than a person, though both are often true

Michael Pollan talks about this in How To Change Your Mind, but explicitly in the context of psychedelics (which I don't think should be recommended to everyone). Drugs surely aren't required for having a transformative experience.

Enlightenment. Here's how I got there: Maybe the reason we have so many words for trauma and so few for "reverse trauma" is that Western biases tend to attribute good outcomes to innate qualities, bad outcomes to the environment, so I looked to Eastern thought for a word.
